The newly established band Fleetwood Mac first turned to black blues, and their art of playing was so similar to that of other groups that the magazine Eye criticised them for their -almost ridiculous mimicryr. However, their choice of performance style took them in the right direction and in 1969, the year in which "The Pious Bird Of Good Omen" appeared, they landed at the top end of the pop charts, even ahead of The Beatles and Stevie Wonder. Of course, in the cover version of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad", which is treated with a velvety string sound, and other bluesy songs, the American influence still makes itself heard, but not without success! The highly individual sound of the group comes best through in the now legendary numbers such as the weightless, gliding "Albatross" and "Black Magic Woman" with it's Latin and blues elements. The group presents a wide range of contrasting numbers, both eastern and western, which reflect the LP's title - something totally new and innovative. In the first few titles, traditional standard numbers come over rather enigmatically while supporting original and rhythmic compactness, but this soon gives over to tactically well-formed instrumentation and lengthy solo interludes. The all-embracing motto 'blues' is taken up by the band in Nat Adderley's 'Work Song' at the very latest, with mind-expanding ways of playing and varying sounds. Catapulted by Mike Bloomfield's artistry on the guitar into the world of rock, all the musicians celebrate these well-known jazz standards and each man contributes his personal skill into forging a perfectly balanced team effort. The title number 'East-West' ultimately demolishes the world of the blues. In the tonal mixture of confidently prepared rock ingredients and borrowings from Indian music (raga rock), we have an amalgamation of rock, blues, jazz and oriental melodies which result in an emotional, unheard-of sound that is well worth the hearing.

Tracklist:

Walkin' Blues

Get Out Of My Life

Woman

I Got A Mind To Give Up Living

All These Blues

Work Song

Mary

Mary

Two Trains Running 1

Never Say No 1

East-West

UPC: 4260019716040
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

Allen Toussaint had it all around him - the voices and spirits of black music, rhythm 'n' blues, funk and soul. He was born in New Orleans and grew up there, the birthplace of jazz. As from 1960, he worked as a record producer and an A&R man at Minit Records, an independent label, which was closely associated with the transformation of the New Orleans Sound. His compositions for fellow musicians landed them in the charts, he frequently participated by performing with them on the piano, and so became a connoisseur and master of all possible sounds. ""Life, Love And Faith"" marks his launch into his solo career, and quite rightly so. In the songs, Toussaint amalgamates all he had mastered with a rocking R&B, funky rhythms and expressive soul to create his highly personal sound. Although it is a soul album through and through, one has the feeling that one is listening to an album from Reprise's stable of singers/songwriters - including such artists as Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat and Joni Mitchell - rather than what usually came out of New Orleans in the early Seventies. And also because ""Life, Love And Faith"" captures an eccentric genius who pursues his own idiosyncratic vision. It is a structured, multi-layered album, which does not show Toussaint in his purest form, but it is his only album that shows just how widely ranged and profound his many talents were. Of greater importance than this posthumous entry into rock 'n' roll's hall of fame is the recognition during her lifetime of her explosive vocal style, which - so Vogue - -turned the whole history of singing upside down. Janis Joplin's discography is just as short and changeable as her life. After two LP releases with the standard 'cast' of rock musicians in the band Big Brother And The Holding Company, with whose excellent musical support she obtained her first recording contract with Columbia Records in 1968, the company provided her with a group augmented with organ and winds. Their intention was to broaden her vocal expression with blues and funk elements, which, however, her most loyal fans regarded as betrayal of the ideals of rock music. Rock fans in the Old World were less critical, especially since Joplin and her Kozmic Blues Band went on a two-month tour of Europe. Between 1968 and 1973 he was first choice as a studio singer for Max Roach, Duke Pearson, Horace Silver, Gary Bartz and Stanley Clarke, to mention but a few. His warm and engaging baritone voice easily crossed the bridge from conventional blues and gospel to a pugnacious, politicising style of soul - Andy Bey was 'spiritual' in every sense of the word. ""Experience And Judgment"", his debut album under his own name, was recorded in New York in 1973 and quickly became a cult album. Bey delivers twelve songs in single length, which are full of relaxed, funky grooves, soulful and electrifying, and quite lacking in gimmickry - in many of them a blues number is lurking in the background as a basic idea. His most important colleagues are Wilbur Bascomb, who let's his electric slap bass really thump out, and Bill Fischer who joins in on an electric piano, synthesizer and various other keyboards and really sets off a little fusion firework display. The most powerful numbers come from Andy Bey himself, such as ""Experience"", ""Judgment"", ""Celestial Blues"", ""Tune Up"" and ""Being Uptight"" - often powering forwards with a vengeance. Bill Fischer - at that time Artistic Director at Atlantic Records - added a few soul ballads to balance out the LP. This album inspired numerous jazz singers, including Gregory Porter. Jamie Cullum says: ""What I love about Andy Bey is that he creates an atmosphere. As soon as he opens his mouth, you're transported to another place. ""This Speakers Corner reissue LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. Intentional or not: Winter was able to win for himself some of the 'rocker' laurels that were reserved for the young Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. But Winter let everyone know that he was only interested in the blues, gutsy, evoking Howlin' Wolf's and Muddy Waters' growling groove, yet nimble-fingered enough on the strings to conjure up astoundingly sleek garlands of sound that fit precisely into each bar of music.Winter remains pretty cool when people attempt to identify personal afflictions in his music: -»When I play blues, I feel good-« he stated recently to a journalist. The small ensemble of Clarence Shaw, whom Mingus described as a super-improviser on the trumpet, Jimmy Knepper, a technical ace on the trombone, the legendary tenor saxophone player Shafi Hadi, and his longstanding friend Dannie Richmond on the drums all earn the very highest recognition, even though the sextet of 1963/64 once more enhanced their creativity in later years.

Tracklist:

Dizzy Moods

Ysabel's Table Dance

Tijuana Gift Shop

Los Mariachis (The Street Musicians)

Flamingo

UPC: 4260019714480
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

The Graduate is an album of songs from the soundtrack of Mike Nichols' movie The Graduate, featuring many songs from the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel as well as several instrumental pieces by Dave Grusin. This was the only reason that so much basic repertoire, traditional blues numbers, black work songs and favorite white show melodies - all filled with a deep soul feeling - reached her fans. ""Emergency Ward!"" is no exception. First there is the explosive medley, recorded live, of George Harrison's ""My Sweet Lord"" and David Nelson's ""Today Is A Killer"". Accompanied by a small combo and a gospel choir, Nina Simone ignites an 18-minute blazing bonfire which loses none of it's spiritual fire for even a second. In contrast to the gentle ""Poppies"", extravagantly produced with strings, woodwinds and chorus, is the questioning ""Isn't It A Pity"", arranged for piano. Here, simple, throbbing harmonies are occasionally allowed to swell into clouds of chords, giving Nina Simone the opportunity to show off her highly diversified vocal timbre which, as so often, fades away into nothing like an unanswered question. It appeared just a few months after the somewhat unsuccessful appearance of Lou Reed's fairly underground first release and rocketed straight into the charts. This production had two British guardian angels to help it on it's way, namely David Bowie and Mick Ronson, both of whom obviously knew how to steer Reed's songwriting qualities into safe waters, without watering down his biting sarcasm and humorous provocation. And that's why grating guitar rock (""Vicious"") is found alongside a bittersweet, tender ballad (""Perfect Day"") and even an old-time jazz parody (""Goodnight Ladies"") which is sung with a tongue a heavy as lead. He integrated all kinds of oriental instruments in his jazz music, such as the koto, bamboo flute and tambura and also - as in this case - in his blues compositions. His saxophone playing is also flawless too and full of wonderful textures, hard and impulsive at one moment, cool and exotic at the next. On this album Lateef explores, in a painterly way, the border areas of the blues, in all their various guises and addresses both eastern and western cultures. "Juba Juba" begins with a drumbeat on a slave ship, the tempo builds up slowly and agonizingly, and is only penetrated by Lateef's plaintive flute and background voices singing »freedom, freedom, freedom«. After such a gloomy beginning the classical blues number "Like It Is" comes over like a breath of fresh air, with it's superb string quartet as the foundation. The R&B contributions on the other tracks testify to Lateef's skilled excursions into the realm of the blues, while the truly adventurous tracks such as "Back Home" and the mystic, Chinese odyssey "Moon Cup" weave a magical net of sheer pleasure. "The Blue Yusef Lateef" is in every possible way absolutely breathtaking. While the New York Times acclaimed the band as a reincarnation of Dizzy Gillespie's Cuban-jazz big band from the end of the Forties, the specialist magazine Rolling Stone spoke of a methadrine trip without visions-«. Organ-player Gregg Rolie offered a very simple explanation of the origins of the highly differentiated sound coloring and the throb and chirp of the Afro-Cuban polyrhythms: he succinctly remarked that each member of the multi-cultural band just played the music which he had grown up with.Just how thrilling this sounds is already evident from the first number on the disc, with it's sounds of nature, twisted rhythms, and little snatches of melody, which - as in several other titles - remains spellbinding even without the fascinating drive of Santana's lead-sound. Of course there is plenty of solo material on the guitar which manifests itself in exuberant improvisations with a fusion of rock, salsa and jazz elements. When listening to this well-oiled rhythm machine, one quite rightly gets the impression that this unique band has stretched itself to it's limits, and it is not by mere coincidence that they split up shortly afterwards. Ornette Coleman is doing the only really new thing in jazz. ® he reportedly said. The present initial Atlantic album was released just in time to coincide with the New York debut of the Coleman Quartet in November 1959. Lewis was sure that Coleman would open up new paths for jazz, and his opinion is reflected in the title of the album - ""The Shape Of Jazz To Come"". After the rather worn-out hard bop routine of the past years, this music was like a breath of fresh air. The fast numbers (""Eventuality"", ""Chronology"") remind one of wildly hyped-up bebop. Other numbers (""Congeniality"", ""Focus On Sanity"") juggle with catchy, almost folk like short motifs. This album contains two of Coleman's most beautiful compositions: ""Peace"" and ""Lonely Woman"", which was later given lyrics and often heard in it's vocal version. The Mulligan-Baker Quartet provided the model for the pianoless quartet - and when the band swings along once in a while with a moderato tempo, it is truly reminiscent of cool jazz. Be that as it may, the two wind instrumentalists just love the frenetic 'cry' and the intentionally 'imprecise' interplay. Clearly defined stanzas or traditional harmonic forms were not for them. The jazz musicologist Peter N. Wilson wrote: ""A record, which is not unjustifiably so entitled® about this LP which was given 5 stars by the magazine Rolling Stone. ""This Speakers Corner reissue LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. Roughly ten years later, his live album - put together from a five-day residency at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood - entered the annals of vinyl history as one of the best live albums of all time and was awarded four stars by the magazine Rolling Stone. Ambiguously entitled by the comprehensively educated Zevon, who had been confronted with the tough side of show business, 'Stand In The Fire' delivers genial simple pure and straightforward rock right from the start, which hit the public with a vengeance. Full of vim and elation, the band pours out the significant, biting verses with fire ('Jeannie Needs A Shooter') and fuels the emotional inferno with high-speed bursts of rock ('Excitable Boy'). Zevon proves his skills as a singer and songwriter in the ballad-like yet powerful 'Mohammed's Radio'. In a direct comparison to this number we have the forthright, no-nonsense hit 'Werewolves Of London' with it's close harmonies. Just how Zevon manages to succeed in getting his delicate voice and lyrics over to the public is shown in the powerful mix of heavy and honky-tonk ('I'll Sleep When I'm Dead') and finally in the thunderous final number - 'Bo Didley's A Gunslinger' - with it's percussive and metrically complicated antiphony. Unimpressed and untouched by the glorification of individuals so typical of the music business, The Alan Parsons Project proved that even without spectacular light shows, rock celebrities in the band or self-composed songs it was possible to rise to stardom. Alan Parsons, who first took up an apprenticeship as a sound engineer at EMI and was later responsible for several Paul McCartney productions and the Pink Floyd album Dark Side Of The Moon at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, drew upon his experience in order to further his solo career. While the co-producer Eric Woolfson wrote songs, Parsons - who had an uncanny feeling for sound - conjured up a lush mélange of synthetic and natural sounds. As with all albums from the early years, Eye In The Sky is inspired by important topics of the times. True to the 'no-future lifestyle' of the 80s, the songs impart a somewhat depressive character which serves as a stark contrast to the steely rock rhythms, free from electronic gimmicks. In addition one finds addictive harmony in the vocal polyphony (Gemini), blaring brass with a Spanish rhythm (Silence And I) and a velvety string sound (Old And Wise). All in all a great achievement by the British wizard of sound at the mixing console.

Tracklist:

Sirius

Eye in the Sky

Children of the Moon

Gemini

Silence and I

You're Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned

Psychobabble

Mammagamma

Step By Step

Old and Wise

UPC: 4260019712929
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

This 1972 release was the second album in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi period. However, to play the blues, and thus to express a man's innermost feelings and state of mind, is probably the most important task of black music. With Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, we have two disciples from the world of the blues who express their highly personal blues with profound instrumental proficiency. The enormously talented, self-taught guitarist Buddy Guy was ranked 23rd in Rolling Stones magazine's list "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", and several times he was awarded one of the coveted Grammy awards. Junior Wells entered Muddy Waters' 'academy' at the tender age of 18 and played the blues harp with enormous passion and virtuosity. In this recording, the musicians condense their rock playing over a bone-dry bass line to create a mantra-like funky style ('A Man Of Many Words'), passing on with fleet-footed steps to a slender chirping sound on the mandolin with a 12-bar blues construction and creating an earthy groove ('T-Bone Shuffle'). Then the duo works perseveringly on an unrelenting chord ('A Poor Man's Plea'), only to return to two numbers that pulsate forcefully with a snappy and jagged offbeat ('This Old Fool'). The handpicked band, among them being co-producer Eric Clapton who is eternalized on the rhythm and bottleneck guitar, and the voodoo rocker Dr. John who occasionally contributes his magic on the keyboard, make this album a truly collectible sound experience. The focal point of the folk movement was Tennessee: it was here that everyone came who had used their grandfathers' songs and fiddle tunes to create the pop-oriented Nashville Sound, a sound which became American music's trademark and export hit. Chet Atkins is one of the people who helped to create this special sound and who kept an Argus-eyed watch on it's originality and development. In addition to the recordings he made in his own studio, he was also a producer and studio guitarist for RCA.This album features Chet Atkins as ""Mister Guitar"", who - as a soloist - only allowed a small and highly discreet rhythm group to accompany him. The result is a refreshingly pure and unadulterated steel-string sound without frills and padding and so has little in common with the commercial country music of the masses. With his relaxed, technically perfect and highly variable playing technique, Atkins shows us what the New World has to offer in the way of folk music: highly melodic numbers which delight the ear with the simplest of means.."" Recording: 1959 in Nashville, Tennessee, by Bob Farris and Bill PorterProduction: Chet Atkins."" ""Mister Guitar"" - Chet Atkins (g), and band."" standard sleeve

Tracklist:

Know That You Know

Rainbow

Hello Bluebird

Siesta

Country Style

Show Me the Way to Go Home

I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles

Backwoods

Country Gentleman

Slinkey

Jessie

Concerto in C Minor

UPC: 4260019712455
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

By the time he was aged 22, Ry Cooder was already a veteran of the music business and in great demand as a studio musician and sideman. Shortly after signing a contract with Warner Music in 1969, he released his first album under his own name, placing his confidence in the musical talent he had developed since being a child and on the rare value of his favourite instrument, the steel guitar. The present LP that carries his name is a fascinating blend of blues, folk, rock 'n' roll and pop - a unique mixture, which combines superb songs, virtuosic playing and somewhat bizarre yet imaginative arrangements. For material, Cooder, the son of folklorist parents, dug out ten gems coming from over six decades, right back to the 1920s - by legends such as Woody Guthrie, Blind Blake, Sleepy John Estes and Leadbelly, as well as a more up-to-date Randy Newman composition. As magnificent as his choice might be, it is the exuberant charm of his own instrumental composition ""Available Space"" that almost steals the show here. Expansive and unbiased, Cooder plays an ironic game made up of wordless irregular phrases, which promise the listener something new and ultimately circle in an infinite loop. Cooder's need to prove himself, moderated by his veneration for the past, helps to create a completely original work that will prove rewarding for the adventurous listener. Then, when their debut release has proved a success, they are bandied around from one arranger to another in all the recording studios imaginable. But having been 'treated' with such sounds as a snappy combo, meaty bigband, and smoochy string orchestra, there at last comes an opportunity for some artists to be themselves again. This album wholly concentrates on Nina Simone and demonstrates that she does not need help from anyone else in order to bring her strikingly expressive voice into the limelight. Accompanying her in her songs about loneliness, identity crises, and desires is her faithful friend, the piano, which she masters equally as well as her voice. The piano parts are far more than just casual accompaniments. Varying from number to number, they range from a classical, bluesy sound, to late-Romantic fervour, right up to avantgarde aggression. Producer: Joe Reisman. Reissue producer: Rob Santos. Recorded at RCA Victor's Music Center Of The World, Hollywood, California. Originally released on RCA (2795). Includes reissue liner notes by Michael Hill. ?The film director Blake Edwards brought into existence what is probably the best opening sequence to his comic crime film when he commissioned a young enterprising company to produce an animated Pink Panther cartoon film. The creative team came up with the idea of giving the cold, glittering diamond the guise of a cool, pink panther, which leads a bungling detective on a merry dance to the slinky sound of the Panther theme. - Mancini would not be Mancini if he did not bathe the film location - the skiing resort Cortina d'Ampezzo -in highly varied musical colours and genres. His well-known love for dance music finds itself in the samba ("It Had Better Be Tonight"), the shuffle ("Champagne And Quail"), and the cha-cha ("Something For Sellers"). But also the ballad, sung by a muted trumpet and saxophone ("Royal Blue"), or the simple combination of keyboard and strings ("Piano And Strings") are all woven into the story. One of the most memorable and delightful sounds is that of the accordion, whose melodies evoke an atmosphere that is filled with the Bohème, Paris and the sound of the musette. This music is never gaudy, but subtle, just like a panther padding quietly along. And if your appetite is now whetted for more, there is an extra portion of Mancini to be found in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" (RCA LSP 2362). On this particular tour, Clapton plays the same mixture of country music, blues and gospel that were to hallmark his own early solo appearances from 1970. He rose to the occasion with consistently brilliant virtuosity; the highlights are a dizzying solo in 'I Don't Want To Discuss It', a lengthy 'Slowhand' passage in 'Only You Know And I Know', and a dry fervent introduction to the wonderfully balanced 'Coming Home'. Vocally Delaney & Bonnie were never better than on this live set, and the 11-piece band sounds musically more close-knit than many a quartet of the times, regardless of whether they are playing a lengthy blues number or a medley of Little Richard songs. It is certainly no coincidence that the band featured here would become Clapton's own choice for his first solo LP, or that the kernel of this group - Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon - would metamorphose into Derek and the Dominos, or that the bulk of the band would constitute the group that would perform with George Harrison in 'All Things Must Pass' and The Concert For Bangladesh, except that their playing (not to mention the recording) is better here. Half the musicians on this record attained near-superstar status less than one year later, and although their fame was fairly short-lived, this is certainly justified, as you will ascertain when you listen to this live performance.

Tracklist:

Things Get Better

Poor Elijah - Tribute to Johnson (Medley)

Poor Elijah

Tribute

Only You Know and I Know

I Don't Want to Discuss It

That's What My Man Is for

Where There's a Will

There's a Way

Coming Home

Little Richard Medley

UPC: 4260019716033
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

In both her public and private life, Nina Simone was adamant about one thing, namely, what she simply would not tolerate. She sometimes complained about the miserable erotic prowess of her lovers, while at other times her audience were a target for her tongue. Sometimes she canceled her performances at short notice and held a tirade against show business as such. In her music, rooted in gospel, she sought a path which took her down a middle course between jazz and pop, thus earning her the title of High Priestess Of Soul (as in the LP title) with her rock fans in the Sixties. The present blues album was recorded during what was undisputedly her most productive phase. It is a recording which does not swim with the tide of the times in that it does not employ massive forces or seek the twang of electrification. Instead Nina Simone's wonderfully sleek contralto voice bathes in the gentle timbre of an organ and a pithy, pulsating - but by no means stomping - rhythm. The cool, unemotional number ""Sings The Blues"" guarantees riveting tension and the authenticity of the genre which is, of course, the be all and end all of music for every black artist. Surely no compilation, no matter how carefully conceived, could possibly mark the diva's 70th birthday in February and sudden death in April 2003 better than this re-release.

Tracklist:

Do I Move You

Day and Night

In the Dark

Real Real

My Man's Gone Now

Backlash Blues

I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl

Buck

Since I Fell for You

The House of the Rising Sun

Blues for Mama

UPC: 4260019711878
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

Johnny Cash At San Quentin [Vinyl LP] Recorded during the making of Granada Television program, 'Johnny Cash At San Quentin Prison' At San Quentin is the 31st overall album by Johnny Cash recorded live at San Quentin State Prison on February 24, 1969 and released on June 4 of that same year. It topped the Billboard charts for over five weeks, thus quickly gaining gold status, as did the single release of 'You?re So Vain'. This song determined the album?s flippant tone, with it's sexually unashamed autobiography ('You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve') and it's observations on the lifestyle of the jet set. But Simon?s sincerity also meant that her lyricism was double-edged. Now that she thinks she has found true love, she expresses her joy over her relationship to James Taylor with 'The Right Thing To Do', another top ten hit. On the other hand she was just as willing to recognize her own mistakes and regretted pointing her finger at other people. It was not just Simon?s frankness that made the album a success, but also Richard Perry?s simple, elegant pop-rock production, which lent Simon?s music a vitality it never known before. Perry was mindful in particular of Simon?s vocals, making them more perceptive and stirring than in her other productions. And of course her fellow musicians, such as Paul and Linda McCartney, Mick Jagger, Klaus Voormann, Lowell George, Bobby Keys, Jim Keltner as well as her ex-husband James Taylor all contributed to the success of the album, which was awarded official platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Tracklist:

The Right Thing to Do

The Carter Family

You're So Vain

His Friends Are More Than Fond of Robin

We Have No Secrets

Embrace Me You Child

Waited So Long

It Was So Easy

Night Owl 1

When You Close Your Eyes

UPC: 4260019715968
Label: Speakers Corner
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: Vinyl

Way in front of composers of the Viennese Classical era, which he did not take particularly seriously - although his performances keenly reflect Beethoven's rhythmicity - comes his personal deity: Bach. Some, like the author Jacques Demêtre called the musician from Mississippi » the rawest and African of all blues players from a musical point of view«, while the critic Net Hentoff was awestruck by Hooker's unfiltered power of expression that could scare the pants off a listener taken unawares. The numbers on this LP bear witness to the fact that Hooker's musical language could stir one's emotions deeply, even without the meaty 'boom boom'. Each title is like a raw diamond, which is intentionally uncut and is to be perceived with directness. With a stutter and a slur in his speech, the singer declaims his song over a twangy guitar, which is driven along by the rhythmic meter. A final farewell is taken sluggishly and sullenly in the forthright text of 'You Lost A Good Man', and even a song without words ('Misbelieving Baby') ponders a question in a purely instrumental monologue. Apart from a dash of boogie ('Pouring Down Rain') Hooker avoids all manner of sweet sounds and harmonies. He remains austerely raw, mercilessly honest, occasionally unforgiving and denies all thoughts of any kind regarding going 'back to the roots'.
